Hi Dawn

I just “cracked the code” on registering for your writing class in Orange, but somehow I am enrolled for the Tuesday and I need to come on Wednesday because of my touring obligation at Bower’s Museum.

I will see you on Wednesday, not Tuesday–let me know if that is not OK.

Hi – just found your website via ISFHWE and will be visiting the library soon to check out some of your recommendations. FYI, the link to your book is broken on

And I think there was a typo in a Susan Sontag quote in the Rotator section; it displays, “…have to sing down to a level” – I believe it should be “sink.”

Thanks for all the info, tips, and recommendations on your website – I will be referring a few people in my writing group to you.

Thanks for stopping by, and thanks for your suggestions, Carol.

Greetings, Dawn: I’m on the Curriculum Committee of the LIFE group at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, CA. One of our members highly recommended you after attending one of your presentations. We feature 2 speakers each Friday in the college Board Room at 1 pm and 2:30 pm. We have June 2012 dates open or we can schedule for next quarter; i.e., July-Aug-Sept for one-hour presentations. As part of the college foundation, we can’t offer an honorarium; however, your books are most welcome. We’ve enjoyed many authors, and they have experienced brisk book sales, as well. Our present program can be found on the college website: (Community, Programs for Seniors; LIFE – Learning is for Everyone; Oceanside LIFE calendar). Please let me know asap if you would be available to speak to our group – attendees average 65-70 each week (membership=160). Releases would be sent to local papers, college website and our newsletter. Look forward to your response soon.

Hi Anne,
I’m glad you stopped by. To subscribe to my blog, just click on the “subscribe” link in the upper-right corner of my blog. It will set you up with an RSS feed mailbox in your email program. At least, that’s what it does on my computer.

Dawn, I just found your blog through your husband’s article at by common consent. My husband and I took your classes at BYU Education week in 2007, bought your book, and have used it for encouragement and writing tips as we work on our histories. I love family stories. My four sisters and I write and share a memory story each Christmas as our gifts to each other. A few months ago our Relief Society started a monthly Personal Hiistory Writing class where we share stories and cheer each other on. I’m going to advertise your blog there. I’m so glad I found it.

I’m glad you found it, too. It sounds like you’re doing lots of good work, both as a writer and as an advocate for the importance of preserving family stories. Good for you. I host a monthly RS gathering at my house that continues to grow. We sit around my kitchen table and read the stories we’ve written during the previous month. It has been a great way for all of us to connect with each other on a deeper level. I wish you well with all of your worthwhile activities.

It really would be nice if folks who wish to could, “LIKE” this website or the book site on Facebook, etc. Reckon so?…

I didn’t know this is an option. Thanks, Willie.

Pardon me for contacting you about this issue in this manner, but I cannot find another way to write you directly.

I followed your website and tried to purchase your book from Signature. They related that they had not carried it for 8 months, but suggested Benchmark. I phoned Benchmark and they do not have your Breathe Life Into Your Life Story either! Is there an easy way to purchase your book?

Thank you.

12 Memoir Mentor May 6, 2013 at 3:14 pm

Signature has stopped store housing our book on their premises and uses a distributor in Chicago instead. The easiest way to acquire our book is through Benchmark used to carry our book and may have run out of it. I’ll check with them to see if they can start stocking it again. You don’t say where you live. The last time I was in Salt Lake City, I saw our book on the shelf at the Deseret Bookstore at City Creek mall. My best wishes to you in your personal history writing project. It’s a lot of work, but it will bless you and your family more than you know.

Could you recommend the best Thesaurus for Memoir Writers? Thanks so much for all you input.

14 Memoir Mentor June 26, 2014 at 1:23 pm

Hi Gloria,
Good to hear from you. I recommend J.I Rodale’s excellent book, The Synonym Finder. I have recommended that book to many people and I frequently use it myself. You can buy it from Amazon here. It’s $19 for a new paperback, but you can buy it much cheaper from second-party venders who advertise on Amazon. Good luck with your writing.

Glad to finally know what happened to Mary Painter who married Isaac Parrott. She was a sister to my great-great-great grandfather and seemed to disappear from existence. She was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, a considerable distance from where the Parrett land was so don’t know how she and Isaac became acquainted except thru the Lutheran Church. Even so they were probably 20-25 miles apart.
